This was Book 10 in the Language of Love series. Romantic, a little twist to provide some tension, and the beautiful setting of Hawaii! What more could you ask? Oh...yes...boy does get girl in the end...but you knew that....right?

Knit Two by Kate Jacobs

This followup book to "The Friday Night Knitting Club" was good, but a bit light for my taste. I found that the story seemed to skip around a lot, although in the end all those loose ends tied themselves together quite nicely and I liked that. We pick up the story again a few years further down the road and check in to see how all the Knitting Club members are doing and what changes have happened in themselves, and their lives. "Knit Two" is a comfortable, light read. Good for a quiet evening. I think it's necessary to read "The Friday Night Knitting Club" first, tho, to put this one in it's proper perspective.

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are at it again, but this time they've left their usual environment and so part of the story revolves around how to solve the crime when you don't have all the resources you are used to. Some time has passed since the last story, as well, and so we are given tiny glimpses into the progression of the relationship between Rhyme and Sachs. (No first names...as Rhyme would say...it's bad luck)

Keep you guessing until the last chapter....even the last page! That seems to be Jeffery Deaver's modus operandi. It works. Although I wasn't as taken with "The Empty Chair" as I have been with the first two books in this series, it was still an enjoyable book. I'll be picking up the next in the series for sure! No disappointment here.

I had to give this story some time to settle once I finished reading it. The story catches you up in the first few pages and you are mesmerized as you follow the lives of a father, a mother, a son, dealing with the loss of a daughter, a twin sister. A loss that is a lie known only to the father. A lie that becomes a catalyst unknown to those affected by it. How that lie can gain a life of it's own and create ripples of distruction throughout those lives. It is also a story of a woman with the courage to correct a wrong. To stand up for what's right while still keeping the lie secret. To love, care and fight for another's rights. This is the kind of story that will not leave you unaffected...good or bad. Yes, I recommend it.

The Scent of Jasmine by Jude Deveraux

This is the fifth book in the Edilean Series. The first three were great, but I think this one is even better. Now that I've sort of figured out the back and forth in history, I'm enjoying the series more. I think each book could be read on it's own, or in a different order with the same enjoyment. I loved the development of the relationship between Cay and Alex. The story moved quickly and the plot outcome unexpected...well, until we get to the boy and girl live happily ever after part. :) Book 4 is a Vook which I am not able to view and so I'm sorry that I'll be missing that part of the story, but not sure if it matters. Since this book was so great, I'm eagerly awaiting book 6, due out in Aug. 2011. I'll be interested to see where Ms Deveraux takes the story next.

Although this book is around 60 yrs old, at this time, the story is still vibrant and alive! The author, Ernest K. Gann, takes you into the heart of what being a pilot is. The comraderie, the love of flying, the risks taken and lengths they were willing to go to to save one of their own. The story is set during WWII when even airline pilots were called to duty, flying to support the war effort. When one of their own goes down in bad weather and an unknown location, they all come together to search for the crew with a "never say die" attitude. If you have a love of flying, if you understand what brings a pilot to the skies, then don't miss this book.

Well, Book two in the Lincoln Rhyme series did not disappoint! I enjoyed The Coffin Dancer every bit as much as The Bone Collector. The action is fast paced and the setting was particularly interesting since I love planes and flying. Once again, the story keeps you going, thinking you know who dunit and you find out in the end....well....you wouldn't really want me to tell you...would you? ;) If there's a movie of this book, I'll be watching it. I'm looking forward to the third installment in this series and can't wait! That should tell you all you really need to know!

Coraline was a fun and entertaining quick read. The story is well-written, but if I had only read the cover notes, I would hesitate to recommend it to some children, even tho it's written for Young Adults. It's hard to feel comfortable recommending a book that has "One of the most frightening books ever written (New York Times Book Review)" at the top of the front cover. It is tense, it is imaginative, but I didn't find it frightening. I would not hesitate to recommend this book for children 12 and up...maybe younger if they enjoy scary books! LOL I haven't seen the movie and don't think I'll run out and rent it, but the book was worth the read.

I've enjoyed this book, once again returning to Edilean. I felt that this story had more to it than the previous two, but then again the others are building background for this one as well. I found the relationship between Sara and Mike to be fun and believable. I loved the added touch of a mystery and a bad guy who seems to know more about it than anyone else. A fun read and I'll be looking for the next in the series.

Wow! I can't believe I haven't discovered this author before now. This book is great and I'm not surprised there's a movie. I've probably got to see that soon. The book is practically written to be made into a movie! There are elements in it that you find in such shows as Criminal Minds, CSI, The Mentalist and Bones and yet it is completely different. I was hooked from the beginning and totally absorbed by the time things were coming together to solve the crime. I'm definitely continuing on with this series.

All I can say is that I wish I'd had this book before my visit to New Orleans, but, that being said, I do plan to go back. It is a wonderful history of the development of New Orleans and it's history. I look forward to re-visiting sites that impressed me the first time, but that I can now look at with a more knowledgeble eye. I learned a lot from this book, not just about the history of New Orleans, but also the world events that affected it's growth and development and why it's culture is so very different from other parts of the US. This book makes it to my keepers list! If you haven't been to New Orleans and you enjoy history, this is a good place to start, but whether you read it or not....New Orleans is a wonderful place to visit!

Submerge yourself in the era of WWII and firsts for women! Wings: A Novel of WWII Flygirls is just that! I truly enjoyed this story about Sally Ketchum who finds herself enrolled in the WASP program, a government sponsored program for women to learn to fly aircraft so that men were freed up for the war effort. This story is just a small example of what women had to deal with in terms of getting the right to fly an airplane and today we can be very thankful for those who blazed the trails we take so much for granted. Being a huge fan of flying and aviation in general, I loved this book! I've read many books about flight over the years, and found this one very similar in mood to those of Richard Bach. The difference was that there was less focus on Sally's relationship with the planes and flying them, and more focus on the influences in her life. The war that women waged to even have the opportunity to fly when so many were against a "skirt" in the cockpit is just a small part of the history of women's rights, but an important one. Those men who supported them and helped train them are to be commended for giving them a chance. Sally's story of dirt-poor-Texas-farmgirl being liberated and becoming strong and independent is a strong background story as well. Her love of Tex, losing him, and then being freed from her father's heavy handed influence leaves her alone in the world and considering her background, I found her actions true to form. She has guts and a natural talent for flying. Bravo! This one is definitely on my keepers list but please do get your own! I will be reading this one again and looking for more of the same.

I'm finding this series a little confusing as a series and hope that it will all tie together in future books. The first book, Lavender Morning was set in present times, and was a great story.
In Days of Gold, the second book, we've all of a sudden jumped backwards in time to the "beginning" of the story of Angus and Edilean who founded the town of Edilean, which the series is named after. What I've found so far, is that each story could stand on it's own. The ties connecting them aren't strong. The story in Days of Gold is a fun romp with a the requisite strong and stubborn characters who simply refuse to get along. I enjoyed this book as I do any of Jude Deveraux's and would recommend it especially to lovers of historical romance.

Come Into the Water: A Survivor's Story is a very quick read about the flooding of Rapid City in 1972. As a book about a bit of local history and a commentary on surviving such a horrific natural disaster, this book is very interesting. My heart went out to the young girl who suffered through such a traumatic event and survived. My biggest question throughout was "Why didn't someone help her deal with it all?" It's very obvious throughout that Ms Magner carried the effects of the flood and her losses throughout her life. It seemed to me that had there been some kind of support system for her at the time, it might not have taken most of the rest of her life to come to terms with these events. I hope that in some way, this book has been a cathartic and cleansing tool for her to find the peace she needs.
As a story, I would have preferred more direct information about the flood with Ms. Magner's events woven into it. The letter from the former Mayor of Rapid City helped to understand just how much the flood affected the community. Would I recommend this book? I'm not sure. If you have an interest in surviving natural disasters, then yes, this would be a book for you.

The Girl Who Could Fly is a great, fun, quick read! Written for Young Adults, it is still a fun story for adults as well. I tended to forget the age of the characters while reading and simply enjoyed the story. A young girl discovers she can fly but that makes her an outcast until she goes to a special "school" where she meets other children with unique abilities. Who hasn't dreamed of having a special or unique ability! This is a great book if you want a light, fun read! It's a great book to give your Young Adult or even read to a not quite Young Adult.

The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs

I enjoyed The Friday Night Knitting Club. It is one of those comfortable, interesting life stories that is able to keep your attention, but not so much so that you can't put it down. The friendships that developed through the Friday Night Knitting Club and the lessons learned are ones we can all recognize. I won't elaborate on the ending except to say that it came out of left field at me, but then that just gave it authenticity because that's exactly how life really is. Read this book if you've ever had friends that you've shared secrets with, argued with, cried with, not spoken to, and re-established an old friendship with...or not. I think you'll understand.

One of the things I really enjoy when reading a new book is when the author takes the story in a new or different direction from the usual. Jana Deleon did just that with this one. What a fun little romp through the bayou this story is! Light? Yes. Fluffy? Yes. Feel-good? Yes. Enjoyable? Most definitely! A really cute idea for a series subtitled "A Ghost-in-Law Mystery Romance" and I'll be looking forward to reading the next two.

It's a quick and easy read, about a deep and absorbing subject wrapped up in a manner that anyone can understand. It is a simple fable about following your dreams. I've been a Jennifer Blake fan for quite a few years now, so when I came across this older novel, I just had to read it. I love that she sets her stories in a favourite place of mine, Louisiana. This is the story of a young girl whose life starts down the wrong path but through the love and protection of an older, successful gentleman, she is able to overcome the hardships she has faced to become strong in the face of adversity. Not your usual romance, but a good love story in the end.

The heroine is a bit different....kind of like taking a girl from today and placing her back in the days of bustles and petticoats where women weren't supposed to know about things like sexually transmitted diseases and whores and babies born out of wedlock, etc. Take a woman whose mother has a societal conscience and teaches her daughter to stand up for the underdog, then add in a gentleman who mostly has a bit part in this story, but it's a very important bit part...he's just absent for much of his part, and he also misunderstands much of the situation...but that's where the story comes in and the romance develops and you've got a historical romance!

This was the first book I've read by Luanne Rice, and I loved it! The story involves three sisters, whose father left when they were young, and whose mother has recently died. They gather at the family home to pack everything up in preparation for selling the property. This leads them on an alternately sad and heart-warming search that re-affirms the bonds of family. If you're a Luanne Rice fan, don't miss this book, and if you're not yet a Luanne Rice fan, I'd recommend this as a great place to start! I'm now planning to read more by this great author.

The ending was a bit unexpected, and having never read any of the previous books in this series, I didn't have the background of previous stories that was referred to occasionally. I would read others in this series, but it wasn't complicated enough that they would be my first choice. Otherwise, it was a decent enough story if you need something to pass the time. The author definitely kept me guessing about who-dun-it! That in itself makes it worthwhile for a mystery lover.

Elizabeth I: A Novel by Margaret George

Generally I enjoy a historical novel. I've certainly enjoyed other works by this author, but for some reason I just didn't get caught up in this one. I felt like I had walked into the middle of the story and somehow missed the back story. Names and events rang bells, but on the whole, I just couldn't get into this one. I can't say it's any fault of the author's either. I don't think I have enough knowledge of Elizabeth I's reign or the historical events surrounding it to even comment. I also don't know what part Lettice actually played but she certainly shows up in the book. I felt Elizabeth came across as rather cold for the most part, but if you are a fan of this period then this book just might be the one for you. For myself, I spent two months on this book and still was only half-way through. I'm passing it on to someone who will enjoy it much more.

As much as I love Diana Gabaldon's novels, I did not enjoy this book. I think Graphic Novels are just not my cup of tea. It was different, interesting and a quick read. I didn't spend a lot of time on the pictures and that's why I think it's just not for me. Some would really enjoy the artwork, and I have great respect for those who are able to portray the writer's conception of their characters so well. For me, tho, I'm very used to my own imagination filling in the details. One of the reasons I don't like to see a movie before I've read the book. For diehard fans of the Outlander series, give this a try. Don't take my word for it. The story is still about Jamie and we all love Jamie....don't we?

Amazing! This isn't my usual type of reading material, but the title caught my attention. This true story has an amazing beginning just like Gianna's life has had. Her young mother, unsure and afraid in the situation she is in as an expectant mother, goes to an abortion clinic. The procedure doesn't work and thanks to the baby being almost term, the mother gives birth to a very much live baby girl. It is a wonder that Gianna survived the abortion procedure, and didn't have more health problems than she did. Her story is one of strength in the face of adversity and faith. Her courage is to be admired and her ability to face things head-on is inspiring.

There is sometimes a feeling of loss when you finish a good book and that is what I felt on finishing this one. I had read all three books in just over a week and been totally immersed in the story. Although I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two, I think it was because of the feeling of it being the last and therefore the story came to an end. There is definitley enough room there for the series to continue, but for now I guess we just treasure that it was written at all. This is definitely a series I would recommend whether you are 10 - 12 - or 112! It bears reading again and could very well become a classic in time. Once again....buy it....read it....enjoy!

I was so enthralled by the first book in this series that it was a really good thing that I already had the second and third one waiting to be read. I flew through this one just as quickly as I did the first, which is to say in just 2-3 days! Believe me, this series cost me sleep....but I didn't really mind. The writing is great, the suspense doesn't quit, and ya gotta just love the characters! Once again....buy it, read it and share it! I don't think you'll regret it and feel free to comment! :)

I loved this hugely popular book (and series)! Written for young adults, it is nevertheless complex enough to satisfy adults as well. The story and the world it is set in are well developed. The pace is very quick with enough action to keep you glued to the book every moment you can spare! The characters are the kind you cheer for and you can't help being on their side! Well, the main characters at least. There are of course the requisite "bad guys". Buy it! Read it! Share it with that young adult in your world! (Or if you're the young adult....share it with a grownup. They'll thank you for it!) ;)

This was an excellently written story of a thought-provoking topic. As a Young Adult novel, the writing was not complex, but interesting enough that I read through very quickly. A story of a couple of elderly ladies, part of a group that is on the verge of death but are given a new drug that is supposed to allow them to 'un-age' to at time when they are younger and then an 'antidote' is given to stop the process. The ladies find life getting younger a challenge and therein lies the story. I won't give away the ending, but who hasn't wondered what it would be like to find some kind of fountain of youth? A great story for that progressive young reader in your life, and not bad for adults either!

I found this book a very quick and easy read. No preaching. No expounding on ideas or techniques that discourage more than encourage. Instead, a gentle, understanding chat with someone who understands. It was definitely thought-provoking and definitely not a diet or a plan. This is not just a book for those who need to lose weight, but is more a book about our love-hate relationship with food and ourselves. For anyone who wants to look further into their relationship with food, I'd recommend this book.

I participated in a Book Group discussion of this book and it was very much enjoyed by all. Women and men alike. If you have the opportunity, you will definitely get more from the book by the discussion that arises in the group situation.

Heat Wave by Richard Castle

As a fan of the TV show "Castle", I'd recommend this book! It's just like reading the show. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it but would have eliminated the scene on page 105 (as referred to in the show). I much prefer the sexual tension between Becket and Castle in the show, but then this is "Castle's Book"! Otherwise, it's a fun, light read, very much in the same spirit as the show. For "Castle" fans....that's all we need!

Having never read any of James Patterson's works before, I decided to give this series a try as it only consists of two books, When the Wind Blows, followed by The Lake House. I understand it also ties into the Maximum Ride series written for young adults. Although I found the story interesting, I found the writing somewhat immature. I felt that aside from the violence, the book is ok for young adults to read. Neither the writing, or plot are very complicated. I felt that this was a storyline that could have been fleshed out so much more. That being said, the story was a quick read that mostly held my attention. It is a story developed from headlines concerning genetic manipulation and creating a "better" human. I found it enjoyable from the perspective of children who can fly, and who wouldn't want to be able to fly, but wish the science and development had been more in depth.

I'm not sure why I'm surprised that I enjoyed this book, but I am! And I did! It may be that I was somewhat distracted by the back cover mentioning that the reporter of the TV show Judgement Day, Suzanne, comes home to find the senator she is currently investigating unconscious on her living room floor. Not far into the story, this appears to not be the case. Yes, someone is unconscious on the living room floor, but the senator is too big a character and it's not him. This was somewhat confusing but once I got past that, the story was good and a very quick read. The characters were tempered with a little humor, and sweetened with a tiny dash of romance. There wasn't enough religion in the book to make it obvious and the story just rang true to the times. It could have been taken from the headlines. I found the relationship between the two detectives to be solid although they could have been fleshed out a bit more. The whole story could have been more detailed but still, it works. Would I call this my favorite read this year? No. But if you're looking for something light and entertaining, check this one out.

I was intrigued to read this book because I've always been a fan of Lawrence of Arabia. That being said, I was disappointed in that I would have expected a little more action and adventure. I guess the action and adventure was had by our main character's father however, and some of his story is told within this story. This book is about a son's search for what happened to the man who was his father, but basically was absent from his life for most of his growing up years and consequently was larger than life. On the other side of the coin, however, as I got deeper and deeper into the story, and finally nearing the conclusion, I grew to appreciate the quiet solidity of the story. Maybe there wasn't a better way to tell it. We have a son in search of a father he barely knows but who appears to have disappeared from the face of the earth. We have a setting in a part of the world that is unknown to a number of people, and we have a story set in a time when this part of the world was in a state of change. In the end, when a book or story makes you want to go beyond and investigate some part of it further, then I think that qualifies as a good read. Once I turned the final page, I then turned to the internet to learn more about Abha. I wanted to see pictures of the area the story was set in, and learn more about the peoples that inhabit this desert land. A student of the history of the Arab nations and the Middle East might find this book even more enjoyable than someone who knows very little about this area of the world. Even so, it was still a good novel.

I have been slowly working my way through this book and find it an uplifting work. I think it is best suited to a study group, where it will inspire good discussion, or if working through it on your own, taken one chapter at a time, giving oneself time to meditate, reflect and absorb. This is not the type of book one can hurry through. Any ladies group would find definite benefit in adding this book to their studies list.

Occasionally I'm a sucker for a fluffy romance, and this book was no exception. It provided all the fluff and romance anyone could want and all wrapped up in magic! It was a feel good, love is all you need, love will heal anything type of story. The thing that might have made it an even better book would have been more detail. More historical facts, but then we do have to remember that this book is part of a "Magical Love" series and as such, it did very well. This was an enjoyable book. A light-hearted historical romance with a slight twist. Young woman with younger brother loses her brother to dastardly weak uncle after father's death. Young woman thinks something is wrong when her letters to her brother go unanswered and she sets off to find him and bring him home. Of course enroute she bumps into (literally) a handsome Earl who then comes to her rescue in more ways than the one he thinks. Amusing and light read and I'd recommend it to fans of historical fiction.

Another fun read from Janet Evanovich and now I'm liking this series more. Although I found the first book humorous, I found myself laughing out loud during this one. If you haven't read any of the Stephanie Plum books, give it a try. Light, fun, a little mystery, a little romance, and just a great quick read! I'm planning to take a break before getting into the next one though. Got a lot of books on the go, so will be alternating series.

Janet Evanovich's series has received a lot of attention in the past few years and if you're wanting a light but interesting thriller, check out her series about an out-of-work 30-something female who turns to her cousin for a job as a Bounty Hunter! I enjoyed the first in the series, "One for the Money". Bold, well-paced, and a little bit of everything! Humour, mystery, crime, thriller, romance....these books have it all. I've already started the second in this series and plan on working my way through all. Not quite Chic-lit...not quite thriller, but something in between and definitely worth the time.

Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town by Warren St. John

I read this book awhile ago and found it very interesting. A peek into the issues that refugees have to deal with in coming to America. Not only are they often coming from traumatic situations, they often don't speak english and the whole way of life of American people is foreign to them. Much like if we were to transport ourselves to a third world country with no prior knowledge of what to expect and not be able to speak their language. I think we'd all feel a little lost and alone.

This book is about a group of refugees who are pulled together in the spirit of sportsmanship and love of soccer. It's also about a coach who cared. I recommend this book to anyone concerned with the refugees of our world. It is inspiring and uplifting.

I can see how this book would make a much better movie. I found the format difficult to follow. Sorry, but I like my punctuation marks. This book has minimal. I found it difficult to know who was talking. The story may be a good one...but I lost it along the way. I can't say I'd recommend the book, but there are some big names in the movie! Maybe I'll watch it.

Hi All!

Hope you found lots of time for reading on Oct. 9th! I did, although I wasn't near a computer to update my blog. I also attended a friend's Celebration of Life for a part of my day. Still, I managed to finish one book, and read all of another. That's cause I even carried my reading over to the next day and immersed myself in just reading and Canadian Thanksgiving turkey dinner! Am I spoiled or what?! :)

SWORN TO SILENCE BY LINDA CASTILLO

Linda Castillo is a new author for me, but one I'm planning to read more of. Sworn to Silence is the first in her series about an Amish raised female cop who returns to the community she was raised in and becomes their Chief of Police. She must solve a series of murders reminiscent of a serial killer that tortured the community when she was growing up. The story grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the end. The characters are believable in all their faults and there is enough description of the Amish culture to give the reader an understanding without feeling overwhelmed with it. There's a little bit of everything here from heart-pounding suspense, to a little touch of romance. The story moves quickly and you may think you know who-dunit....but I'd bet you'd be wrong! I was. I highly recommend that fans of police procedurals and good thrillers in general find this book, read it and let me know what you think! I personally couldn't wait to get started on the next in the series, and am going to be anxiously awaiting the third!

The next book I read during the read-a-thon, and which I carried over to the next day because I just couldn't put it down, was the second in Linda Castillo's series, PRAY FOR SILENCE.

This book was every bit as good as the first one. Once again we visit the small town near an Amish community with Chief of Police Kate Burkholder. Again, a murder to solve. this time it's an Amish family and it appears senseless. It's late at night and I've been reading for quite awhile in quiet and my phone rings. I literally jumped! I was that caught up in the story. Linda Castillo has done it again. Always there is a little twist and you might think you know who-dunit...but I'd guess you'd be wrong. I love that about her books. In this book we also learn a little more about our Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and what makes her tick. We also learn a little more about the Amish. If you loved her first book, Sworn to Silence, then definitely pick this one up as well. All I can say is that I'm so looking forward to the next one in the series!

The Ghost by Robert Harris

I don't usually read Reader's Digest Condensed versions of stories, but this one caught my attention and once caught, I looked for a copy of the book. Not finding one, I resorted to the condensed version. That's an indication of how drawn in I was to the story. Layer upon layer upon layer is carefully revealed, drawing the reader deeper into the story. Wonderfully suspenseful and very well-written. The Ghost-writer steps into the middle of a mystery to write a memoir for a politician and finds himself with much more than appears on the surface. It will keep you guessing until the very end. I'll be looking for more by this author and definitely recommend this book.

Right now I'm reading The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson, Audition: A Memoir by Barbara Walters, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, a story called The Ghost by Robert Harris that I wish I could find the book, but have to be satisfied with the Reader's Digest Condensed version of, and a book about Fathers and Daughters. I'll be reviewing these as I finish them.

Can you believe it's September again!? This past year has been one of lots of changes and many books being read. The reading always continues, doesn't it?

Although this isn't everything, here's a mini-update on what I've been reading in the past little while...

Dragon by Clive Cussler -Another great Dirk Pitt adventure that pulls you in with almost non-stop action and adventure. I say almost because towards the end I felt it lag just a tiny bit and the ending disappointed slightly. Otherwise a great thrill read! That Dirk Pitt can do anything!

Always by Jude Deveraux - Normally I love Jude Deveraux's books, and normally I love paranormal/time-travel type stories but I had a little trouble with this one even after I realized it's part of a trilogy. I was lost with the references to previous storyline and felt left hanging at the end. This book is likely best read in the proper order and I may come back to it once I find and read the others. For this particular book in this particular trilogy, I only give it 3 stars. I recognized the Montgomery name from Ms. Deveraux's other series and love that she follows the same family throughout history. Guess I need to find the beginning and start there!

Politically Correct Bedtime Stories: Modern Tales for Our Life and Times by James Finn Garner - A delightful little romp through those familiar fairytales we all grew up with but this is not how we remember them. I found this politically correct version amusing, quick and light reading. Worth the effort.

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Three stars because it is very well written, but it took me a long time to read this book. I found the pace extremely slow-moving and the story somewhat disconnected. I would only recommend this book to those who prefer a more literary experience.

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Neffenegger - Having been a fan of Time Travel all my life, this book intrigued me by the title alone. It is a love story played out in time. I found it very well conceived and put together. Keeping the different incidents in perspective and connected when one character is moving forward in time chronologically, yet interacting with the time-travelling character who is jumping backwards and forwards randomly is a major feat. I found the date/time and characters ages that preceded each event were extremely helpful in keeping things in perspective. I also liked the assist given at the beginning of each event that indicated whose perspective we were looking at, Henry, or Clare. This is definitely a book I would recommend.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - I originally wanted to read this book because it was and is so popular. I was disappointed over all. I give kudos to Elizabeth Gilbert for having the courage to take a year and go and live in not just one, but three other countries. Who wouldn't love to do that? As for the personal heart-rending and spiritual revelations, I think we all go through that at some point in our lives. We are all searching and some of us even find what we're looking for. Not all of us want to write about it, but Elizabeth does it very well. The books is an enjoyable read and a spiritual odyssey. The one thing I take away from it is the confirmation of something I already discovered for myself in a similar, although less dramatic manner. We need to find our own inner strength, make peace with ourselves and love ourselves as we are. Then we can move forward in the world.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson - Ok, so I gave in to all the hype surrounding this book and I must say that it didn't disappoint. I found it a slow start up to about the first 200 pages or so, or about the 5th chapter and was questioning what all the hype was about, but then I found it had drawn me in to the point of staying up most of the night reading a bit, then putting the book down and trying to sleep only to turn the light back on cause I had to read just a bit more. The pace isn't fast, or hard-hitting, but rather a slow steady burn with enough twists and discoveries to keep you interested and drawn along until the end. Now I need the second and third books in this series. I'm sure they will be every bit as good and I heartily recommend this trilogy!

Perfect for the Beach by Lori Foster, Janelle Denison, Erin McCarthy, MaryJanice Davidson, Morgan Leigh and Kayla Perrin - This collection of romances are quick reads designed to take along to the beach, or anywhere else you might be vacationing, and pick up and put down at your leisure. I enjoyed most of the stories, but found I couldn't get interested in one of them. Still, a nice way to spend some relaxation time.

Masquerade by Nancy Moser - I enjoyed this book. A light-hearted historical romance with just enough Christian reference to make it believable and enjoyable yet not overwhelming. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of drawings of fashion that was used in the book. It shows an interest and dedication of the author to the realistic descriptions of fashions of the time the story is set in. The storyline has been done before, but in this case it was very enjoyable. The novel also includes questions for a book group.

The War Memoirs of (HRH) Wallis, Duchess of Windsor by Kate Auspitz - Maybe I'm to much of a romantic, but I've always been intrigued that a man who could be King would give up his crown for he woman he loved. For that reason I requested this book from the ER program. I admit to not knowing much of the history of Wallis and Edward before reading this and maybe that would have put the book in better context for me. Unfortunately through this book I lost a lot of my admiration for Wallis and Edward. The book is well-written and quite realistic so that the reader forgets it is a novel and not a real memoir. I didn't discover the footnotes until quite well into the book and wished I had seen them earlier as I felt that they do add to the understanding along the way. Wallis as the main character is portrayed as vain, selfish and not above allowing herself to be used by those who "handled" her and Edward throughout. I rapidly came to dislike her and her flirtatious, self-centered ways.Edward is there in more of a supporting role and I found Wallis' treatment of him less than admirable. I suppose if the facts are true, then he maybe was somewhat boyish as he seemed to be more interested in entertaining activities rather than world affairs.I did enjoy the many references to historical figures. The world becomes a smaller place when looked at on such a grand scale. What I might have wished for more of would be background details, but being a memoir, I guess that implies a more one-sided focus and the author accomplished that extremely well.

Periwinkle Isn't Paris by Marilyn Eisenstein - This is a wonderful children's book about a young girl who dreams of Paris. She loves everything to do with Paris and wants to go there. Who doesn't have a place they have wanted to go all their life? This one is worth sharing with that special young reader in your life.

Summer After Summer by Ann Defee - A light fun little romance following the main characters from childhood where Jazzy has a crush on one of her best friends boyfriends, Charlie, into adulthood where they acknowledge their love for each other but previous commitments get in the way, and then years later when they return to where it all began. This book is one of Harlequin's Everlasting Love series where "Every great love has a story to tell." A unique perspective and a modern, everyday take on romance. I enjoyed this light-hearted read.

Sheiks of Summer by Susan Mallery, Alexandra Sellers and Fiona Brand - This was a nice light read comprising 3 stories where the male lead is a Sheik. I particularly enjoyed the last story which also involved reincarnation and genetic memory. A little bit of a different twist.

Under the Dome by Stephen King - I haven't read any Stephen King for quite a few years, but decided to give this one a try when it was offered to me. I found the story well-written but lengthy and found myself wishing it would just get to the point. In the end, I was less than impressed with this book. It is not something I would recommend to any but a Stephen King fan.

Stardust of Yesterday (Haunted Hearts Series) by Lynn Kurland - I enjoyed this light fantasy that includes romance, ghosts, and a castle. What more could one ask for in a romantic fantasy. If you believe in ghosts or wish for something a little out of the ordinary, this book is for you. I'll be looking for more by this author.

Stone's Fall by Iain Pears

This book is a keeper in my mind. I was totally intrigued by the author's writing of the story "backwards". By that I mean that the story opens Part 1 with Matthew Braddock finding out about the death of a women he has known in the past, and that she has left a package for him. Thus begins the mystery that unravels as the author takes us into the past history of the characters. My first thought was how on earth could a story be written "backwards", but Iain Pears accomplishes that task most successfully. In each of the three parts, he unravels the skein while at the same time expertly weaving all the threads into a whole fabric. I don't want to give away any of the story, so will keep my comments to a minimum, but suffice to say that this book is a favorite and bears reading more than once. I can honestly say I have found a new author to read and look forward to acquiring more of his works. If you enjoy a story that is complex and detailed and that still keeps you guessing until the end, then I highly recommend Stone's Fall.

Palace Circle by Rebecca Dean

I really enjoyed this book. The story was engaging and believable and I loved the inclusion of well-known historical figures. I appreciate when an author goes to the trouble to build the story around actual historical events and figures and provides a learning experience for the reader as well as an enjoyable read. This is the first of three novels by Rebecca Dean and I am looking forward to reading the next two.

Dark Side of the Morgue by Raymond Benson

I quite enjoy a good who-dunnit, and found this to be just that! Spike Berenger is a little rough around the edges, and so is his investigative style, but isn't that to be expected in a good detective story? The story kept me guessing right to the end and I enjoy when a book can do that. There's nothing worse than figuring out the story before all is revealed! I would definitely pick up another of Raymond Benson's mysteries.

Women in Family Business: What keeps You Up at Night?

An interesting book, but not what I expected or was looking for. Having just gone into business with a family member, I was looking for more of a partnership with family members perspective. This book seemed to focus more on the wife as support to her husband who is the primary business person and then on her relationships with other family members. For me it didn't consider the perspective of two family members of equal status working together to run a business. I do think if the situation you are in is one where you're looking for direction in how to be supportive of family members running businesses, then this book would be helpful. I did find it well-written, just not what I was looking for.

Size 2 for Life by Ashley Marriott and Marc L. Paulsen, MD

I found this an interesting and encouraging book. We all might want to be Size 2, but in this book the authors explain how not everyone can be a size 2, but they can be an adjusted size 2. They explain how to find what your perfect size might be by measuring your wrist. They tie in eating properly, and getting the right amount of exercise in a no-nonsense and up-front manner that I found encouraging. This is not the kind of book you can sit down and read cover to cover, tho. It is more a reference, with facts, exercises, recipes, and a diet plan that can help you along the way. I think this book is worth a read, and maybe will inspire a new perspective on sizing and maybe even encourage getting to your size 2!

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. I wasn't sure what direction it was going in. Then it started to draw me in to the story. It's one of those that you will keep reading because you want to understand. The main character is Morgan Carey, but the book is not about him. It is more about his relationship with his wife and his guilt regarding their relationship. It is about learning from our relationships and is told with a sensitivity to all the depths of emotion involved. It is about love, death, and finding oneself again. Moving, thoughtful, and inspiring. I also enjoyed the secondary relationships, especially the ones between Morgan and Ben Kamakani, and his family. They befriended Morgan at a time of great loss for him, and then for themselves, and they helped him heal, and gave him hope for the future. Read this book, enjoy the Hawaiian setting, and join Morgan as he finds his redemption.

Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory by Mickey Hess

I loved the cover of this book! Just reminded me of a box of Ritz crackers! The book is about anything but crackers, though! It is about searching for what we want to be when we grow up, and finding that what we want to be isn't always what we thought it was. It's about doing the job we work and study hard for, and finding that other jobs are necessary to fill in the gaps. It's about finding jobs, and looking for meaning in what we do. Sometimes funny, and always thoughtful and inspiring, I enjoyed this book. Mickey Hess has let us into his life for a year of working, going to school, and all his doubts and wonderings about what he wants to do when he grows up. He gives us his insights with a down to earth humour I found very engaging. If you've ever questioned where you're going next in your life and career, try this book. You'll find you're not alone.

Lisa makes a lot of sense with her approach to life and her steps in how to get past those things that trip us up...and don't we all have just one? or two? or a few??? I stayed up late the past two nights totally engrossed in what I was reading and couldn't wait to finish the book. Lisa's candor and down to earth approach make No Matter What! an easy book to read. Her steps aren't rocket science, and anyone could follow them and apply them to their own life. The difficult part would be the confronting our own selves! But aren't we worth it?! I would love for everyone to be able to read this book and just imagine the possibilities! Definitely a keeper! Find it! Buy it! Read it! Keep it!

Threshold: A Hard-Boiled Thriller by Bonnie Kozek

I read this book with a reluctant fascination. Wondering where the story was going, but although I wasn't enjoying much about it, still continuuing to read on and find out. The setting is the streets and about as low as it gets. The lead character, Honey McGuinness, is not your average leading lady crime fighter. She chooses to live on skid row and has seen it all. When one of her friends is murdered, she takes it upon herself to solve the crime. As the back of the book says, it is "Bawdy, gritty, and unrelenting...." It's been awhile since I read Deadly Exchange. As you will notice, we've been a little busy opening our bookstore, but the reading still continued. Deadly Exchange was a great book and an intriguing idea. Worthy of a movie even! I can just see something of this nature happening in these days of fear of terrorist threats, and our ever expanding technological advances. Some day it just might happen that everyone has a chip under their skin, and that radio frequencies can communicate and effect that chip...maybe the person carrying it too? Interesting premise, isn't it? What would be the possibilities? I recommend this book to anyone interested in futuristic possibilities!

Never Without A Book Ltd. (the store)

I'm excited to say we are now open! It's been a very busy time getting the store set up and getting all the books on the shelves, and we're still working hard at that. We still have boxes of books to go, but opened our doors anyway. One of our most exciting events lately was the addition of our bookstore cats! (Rodent control...I like to say! ;)) Shakespeare and Rembrandt were strays we adopted from the SPCA. They are both very laid back and have adapted well to their new home at the bookstore. That's them in the attached pictures. Rembrandt is an orange and white longhair who loves to climb anything. Shakespeare is the cream ginger longhair who loves to be petted and held. We're hearing lots of good comments from our customers so far and looking forward to many happy years in this location. If you're ever in Edmonton, look us up!

The Book Store!!! - An Update!

First I apologize to all for not keeping current on my book reviews. I am quite behind and hope to spend some time catching up soon. The combination of working full-time and spending as much available time as possible on the store isn't leaving much time for sleep or anything else! It's all good, tho! Things are so exciting now that we have a space and can work towards renovating and setting up the store! We have a name --- Never Without A Book Ltd. --- and are finally making progress on a logo. New Orleans Stories: Great Writers on the City by Various Authors

What a mixed bag of stories one can find in this book. Some I loved, some I didn't so much. Some were a little strange, especially some of those cures. But that's ok. This is not necessarily a book of stories about New Orleans. It is however a gathering of stories by people who either were from New Orleans, or lived in New Orleans at some point. It is an illustration of how this most decadent city can tug at your soul. Most of the stories are short and can be read in one sitting. Authors include such greats as William Faulkner, Anne Rice, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, and even Louis Armstrong. Although you might not like all of these stories, I think you might find one or two that catch your interest. For me, it's all about New Orleans, and that made reading it worthwhile.

Memoirs of a Fortune Teller & Vigilante Witch Hunter by Gary Turcotte

I'm choosing to post a joint review for these two books, because they are written by the same author, but also they go together. My first thought on the writing, and it made it difficult to read, was how choppy it came across. I wondered if it was on purpose, giving a sense of separate entries being written in "Memoirs of a Fortune Teller". If that was the intention, then it succeeded. Although the story was easy to follow, gaps were obvious. It idea is a good one, tho. I simply wished for more continuity. "Vigilante Witch Hunter" provided more continuity, although at times it also felt a little choppy. At times I felt rushed through the storyline as well. I really feel this is an interesting and unique idea that maybe simply needs a little more meat on the bones. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either.

Wow! It's been awhile since I've posted a review.....but I have a really good excuse! :) Aside from working full-time, I've been involved in the setting up of a new used bookstore. It's name? Never Without A Book Ltd. Isn't that exciting??? Over the past month or so, a lot of my spare time has been spent on tasks necessary to setting up and becoming an owner/manager of a business. Never Without A Book Ltd. is now incorporated as of a couple of weeks ago, and has already purchased inventory and fixtures. Currently we are in the process of obtaining a location and going through all the requirements to that end. What a long and involved process! Consequently my review books are backing up and although I've continued to read, posting reviews has fallen by the wayside. I'm now hoping to correct that over this next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, I'll post any updates regarding the bookstore as they happen! And now....on to some reviews.......

New Orleans Requiem by D. J. Donaldson

I loved the New Orleans memories this book brought back. Almost everywhere the characters went, I could envision. That being said, I didn't ever see any murders while I was there and one can only be thankful for that! This was a very well-written murder mystery and I'm sorry to say that it is now out of print. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of D.J.Donaldson's work. In checking his website, I found that this particular series of books are all out of print. I find that sad as I enjoyed it so much.

The book is part of a series of Andy Broussard/Kit Franklin mysteries. In this one, a serial murder appears in New Orleans at the same time as a convention of forensic specialists. Kit and Andy work with the local law enforcement, and a couple of their forensic friends to solve the murder.

I recommend this book and wish everyone interested in reading it luck in your search. Meanwhile I'm starting my search for others in the series!

If you've never heard him, you don't know what you're missing. His voice was one of a kind. His skill with his horn again one of a kind. There was no one like "Satchmo". His story is as inspiring as it is amazing. Louis Armstrong was one of the greats!

This book is a comprehensive story of his life and career. Well worth reading. His music is well worth listening to. I hope you've taken a few minutes and clicked on the above link for one of his more familiar songs.

What is worse, a physical affair? Or an emotional affair? What is more forgiveable? Love and Other Natural Disasters is an exploration of how one couple gets through an emotional affair. Holly Shumas is a licensed marriage and family therapist who explores this idea in her second novel. Eve is close to giving birth to her second child, and reflecting on the wonderful life she has with her husband Jonathan, when she discovers he is involved, emotionally, with another woman. How she reacts to this knowledge, and how she struggles to make sense of it is only half the story. Her hurt is palpable and yet at the same time I felt some of her reactions were extreme. But then again, how do we know how we would react given the same situation. How would you feel and what would you do if you found that your husband had an emotionally intimate relationship with another woman. That he was more able to discuss and share things with her than you. And even more hurtful is that he kept it secret. Jon's affair is mostly conducted through email and that makes the secretiveness easy without any outright lies. As such, he doesn't see this extra-marital relationship as wrong as there is no physical relationship. It is a sign of the times that people can meet and become emotionally involved online, without even meeting in person. Could this difference of thought and perspective be attributed in part to how men and women are emotionally wired? An interesting story that gives much to think about. A well-written book and I recommend it.

This one is for all the animal lover's out there. If you love dogs, and your heart goes out to all those in need of forever homes, then this is one book you should definitely read! Jessie (the dog) is a mature black labrador retriever, abandoned by her family, who found a new home with Ruth Tschudin who had a vision that grew from a dog pulling a child in a wagon, to "a place where adoptive families and abandoned animals could love and support each other." This is Jessie's story, told through Jessie's eyes, but with Ruth's assistance, because we all know it's kind of difficult for a dog to type! This story is heart-breaking, and heart-warming. Eagle Brand Classic Recipes

Who doesn't need another handy little recipe book of way to yummy recipes! this is just such a book. The cover along makes you hungry. This one comes in handy for all those special occasions when you need to take something along for a potluck, or when company's coming and you want to serve something special. I like that some of the recipes are make-ahead-able and freeze-able. Once again, far to many choices but one need never again wonder what to do with that can of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk!

This tiny little book inspired me and made me hungry! I need to go on a shopping trip to get some ingredients, but first I would have to make up my mind which tarts to try. I love that she has included a section on mastering pastry, especially since pastry and I have been enemies for quite some time. Then I would have to decide...will it be the ever favorite Quiche Lorraine? Or, should I try the Tomato and Prosciutto Tart? Or maybe the Ambrosial Peach, Vanilla and Amaretti Tarte Tatin. To many yummy choices!

Family Plots: Love, Death & Tax Evasion by Mary Patrick Kavanaugh

I didn't quite know what to make of this book at first. I think the title and the cover are indicative of the unique and unusual sense of humor of the author. After all, included on the cover is a 'stamp' "Awarded Sixteen Rejections from Prominent NYC Publishers 2008". Rejections? Hmmm... After reading it, I'm not sure why. I found it entertaining to say the least. Possibly the rejectors didn't like the mix of fact and fiction? Mary Patrick Kavanaugh says this "Family Plots is a novel based on the facts of my life. Many events are drawn from actual experiences; however, I have collapsed time, conflated characters, invented dialogue, and rendered some fictional scenes and characters purely for dramatic impact. Because I am not the first or last writer to sensationalize the verifiable data of my personal life, I think there should be a genre recognized for this category of work. If it were up to me, I'd call it Pulp Faction." I have to agree with her. I applaud her story-telling abilities and enjoyed the quirky approach.

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

Although I've been wanting to read this book for awhile...ever since I read "The Five People You meet in Heaven"...I didn't have it on my list until a conversation with a friend brought it to mind. After talking about it, I just had to read it. I'm glad I did. This is a wonderful conversation between the author and his favorite teacher. A relationship that wasn't simply student and teacher, but friend, and mentor as well. We all have at least one person in our lives who we think of as a mentor and who is or was one of those simply wise people we wish we could be around forever. Morrie is one of those who when faced with the certainty of his own death, stands strong and proud in his beliefs and his attitude to life. We can all learn from his example. All I can say is.....Read it. Read it!

Land of Marvels by Barry Unsworth

"Barry Unsworth, a writer with an "almost magical capacity for literary time travel" (New York Times Book Review) has the extraordinary ability to re-create the past and make it relevant to contemporary readers." is a quote from the back of the book. I really enjoyed this book. I've always had a fascination for archeology and history and combining that with a newer interest in all things middle eastern, this book fit right in! I found it compelling and informative even though it is a work of fiction. The story is set in 1914, pre-WWI times. The historical, archeaological & geological information was interesting and educational at the same time. I enjoy when an author adds little snippets of relevant information to their story. The characters are realistic and believable and make you want to care about the story. This is the kind of book that can draw the reader right in and I felt like I had been on this adventure with them. I didn't like the way the story ended, but it fits. I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. This one's a keeper for me!

The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier

I have been a fan of Sidney Poitier ever since I first watched "To Sir With Love"! Who hasn't? But is it the character? Or is it the man? I consider him to be one of our greatest actors and yet so quietly he came to greatness. Until reading this autobiography, I can't say I knew very much about Sidney Poitier. Now, I can say that my respect for him is well-placed and I'm even more a fan.

From his childhood, growing up in poverty on Cat Island in the Bahamas, to his battle with prostate cancer, this book reveals the life of a man of dignity. I found his childhood filled with treasured memories growing up with a freedom most children never know and also packed with lessons that most never learn, but that stood him well in later life. I found myself agreeing with his thoughts and comparisons of that childhood with respect to today's children with their video games and need for constant outside stimulus.

Times were different then, and so were the struggles he faced. He was a man who worked hard and took pride in what he accomplished. When things were difficult, he kept his focus and never gave up. I appreciated his discussions about the making of his films and his perspective relating the stories to what was happening historically. The one thing I have to respect him for is his humility. Often I noticed him giving credit to those who came before him for paving the way for him and those who came after.

I recommend reading this book. We can all learn something from such a thoughtful, intelligent, respectful human being.

When We Were Romans by Matthew Kneale

This was an easy read and interesting, although I'm not sure I really enjoyed it. The story is told from the perspective of a nine-year old boy with all the focus and interests one would expect from this age. His friends, his hamster, his toys and his relationships with his family. Occasionally we are treated to excerpts of his learning about Space and Roman history. It is much more than that, tho, the reader finds, as the story unfolds. At first I was amused at the perspective, and I am impressed with the author's ability to stay 'in character' throughout. Some would be bothered by the mis-spellings and grammatical errors but it is what you would expect from inside the mind of a 9-yr old. There were definitely times I felt that Lawrence was mature for his age, like when he is trying his best to help his mother even when he's not sure what it is that she needs, and other times when I felt he was simply acting out by his deliberate misbehaviour. The interaction between him and his sister was completely believable. There were parts that puzzled me and the ending was not at all expected but did make everything clearer and more understandable. I don't like to give away an ending, so I won't, but I do feel this book is worth reading. It will draw you in.

To Marry The Duke by Julianne MacLean

A lot of historical romances are basically the same. Just expanded versions of the boy-meets-girl formula and set in historical times. That being said, I found this book bright and refreshing. Yes we do have the historical setting, and as the title implies, the plan is to marry a Duke. Our heroine, however, is no blushing young maid, but instead is a strong, forthright and independent American daughter of a working class background whose family has made it big in America. Being rich, however, doesn't automatically give one entrance into American society and therein lies the reason Sophia has come to have a 'season' in London Society. How she handles the oh so proper London Society, and her new family make this a fun and enjoyable read. I particularly appreciated the perspective of Sophia's Dangerous Duke which added depth to the story.

If you're a die-hard romance fan, give this one a try. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

City Above The Sea And Other Poems by Stephen Alan Saft

A book of poetry. Easy to read and like most books of poetry, not all will be liked or enjoyed by everyone. Some of the poems didn't quite catch my attention, however, there were others that spoke to me, bringing back memories that I could relate to the poems, or in the case of a couple, so discriptive that I could almost be there. 'To An Old Professer Wherever" reminded me of an english teacher who made a huge impression on me and encouraged my reading habits! 'The Cucumber Plant To The Sun' and 'Tomatoes' brought images. textures and tastes to mind. I could almost smell them growing and could definitely picture them in my minds eye. 'Solomon Bricker' is one that required the reader to think, and 'New York In Winter' amused me for some reason. 'Memories of a Father' struck a little close to home and with a few changes here and there, it could be for my own Father. For some reason, 'Blacksmith' also reminded me of my Father. I liked 'What Will Be' just because.

If you enjoy poetry, then you might want to give this one a try.

Legs Talk: Let Your Legs Do The Talking by D.E. Boone

This is a cute little book. A quick read, less than an hour and quite enjoyable. It's a different take on romance with the whole story being conducted pictorially by legs. The comments accompanying each picture are humorous and playful. This would make a fun addition to a Valentine's gift, or for anyone who appreciates a unique take on the dating game.

Tidings of Great Joy by Sandra Brown

A wonderful story! Of course the usual boy meets girl, some conflict arises, they resolve it while falling madly in love, and well, you know the rest! This one is a little bit of a different approach and I enjoyed it completely. I won't tell any secrets, but there were a couple of parts in the story that really caught at my heart. Unlike the usual fluff romance, I found the depth of the characters and situations to be more complex. We have a strong, independent, successful and self-sufficient woman, and an equally successful, caring, charming man. They have believable conflicts and resolutions and yet there is also all the romance, seduction and heat one would want in a romance.

For all those who love a good, light romance, this is one I'd recommend.

Hot & Bothered by Susan Andersen

Another great story by Susan Andersen. The only thing I'm disappointed in, is that this is Book 3 of 4, and I don't have 2 0r 4 yet! The characters are so well developed in this story that I almost felt like I knew them. They were real, and well balanced. Victoria comes from a life of privilege and a corrupt family. She gets drawn back into the family circle when her father is found murdered, and her half-brother Jared the prime suspect and on the run. Victoria is left to pick up the pieces of her father's life, but first she needs to find Jared. Enter John, the man she had a "no strins, no last names" fling with 6 yrs ago. As a private eye, what he does best is find missing kids and despite their unresolved past, Victoria hires John to help her find her missing brother and solve her father's murder.

This is the kind of book that you just want to keep reading. It's addictive and the further into it I got, the less I wanted to put it down. I'm just going to have to go out and find the other two books in this series now!

Head Over Heels by Susan Andersen

This was a fun, intelligent read! In the words of Jayne Ann Krentz, "Bright, smart, sexy, thoroughly entertaining". I felt this book to be a more grown-up, sassy romance and deserving of the name 'chic-lit' over 'fluff'. Veronica is an independent, caring professional with a career and a great life-style. Then she has to return to the town she couldn't wait to leave and take care of a family crisis. Of course when she gets there, she meets the dangerous Cooper Blackstock and the sparks start flying! Solving a murder and taking care of family business keep Veronica busy, but not so busy she can't fall in love.

I really enjoyed Head Over Heels, and of course had to continue with the next in the series. If you like light-hearted, intelligent romance, with a little mystery thrown in, then this book is for you! By the way, this is Book 1 in a series of 4, so be prepared to be hooked!

Letters From New Orleans by Rob Walker

What a treat this was! To re-visit New Orleans through Rob Walker's eyes was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed every part of this book. It had me wishing I had explored more and gotten to know more of the local people during my short stay there. Not to worry, tho, as I'm already planning a trip back.

Rob Walker spent about 3 years living in and exploring New Orleans, but he didn't just do the touristy things. He delved into a little of what makes New Orleans tick. A little history, a little politics, and a lot of day to day experiences.

And as they say in this quote from his book, quoting The Time Out Guide to New Orleans: "Orleanians are proud of their culture. Visitors are expected to be as enthusiastic about the city as the natives are. If you like the city, tell everyone; if you're not happy in New Orleans, keep it to yourself." I loved the city, and loved this book!

I read this book awhile ago, and quite enjoyed it. It is so well written and so enjoyable, that it's easy to disregard the innocent ignorance of our married leading lady, Lady Emmalene Eberhart. One would expect a woman living in those times, who has been allowed to learn the bow and arrow, and who has had the freedom of her father's castle, who has been running her husband's castle and even seeing to the training of his men in his absence, to be less ignorant of the ways between a man and a woman, but therein lies the crux of the problem.

How Lady Emmalene approaches becoming a good wife and mother, which is after all what any good wife should aspire to, makes for an interesting twist in the story. Throw in a feudal struggle for the property and dowry that come with her, and a ruggedly handsome, landless knight, and you have the makings for a wonderfully medieval who-dun-it/romance.

For sheer enjoyment and a love of romances set in medieval times, this book is a great read! If you're looking for more history and weight to your reading, tho, I'd give this a pass.

Jumble Pie by Melanie Lynne Hauser

Jumble Pie is the story of a pie, and it's position as a metaphor in the lives of two girls. Jumble Pie is also a coming of age story. Starting out with two young girls who meet in school, become friends, and grow up together, we follow their story of coming to terms with their differences and what makes them friends. Although we move between the two girls, it is mostly about Em, and her view of their relationship and how she feels about things. Occasionally we see Juliet's viewpoint, although it also revolves around Em. The continuing thread in the story, and the piece de resistance that holds them together is 'the pie'. Hmmmm....I wonder if it tastes as good as it sounds???

Diary of a Blues Goddess by Erica Orloff

First of all I have to say I enjoyed this book for it's setting in New Orleans and the memories provoked. It did however bring back a wish that I had been able to go to The House of Blues while I was there. This book is just a little taste of New Orleans and the music it is famous for.

Diary of a Blues Goddess is a little bit romance, a little bit chic lit, and a little bit paranormal, but what else would you expect in New Orleans! Of course there has to be blues, jazz, ghosts, beignets, a little bit of plantations, a lot of the French Quarter and loads of wonderful characters. It is well named as a Diary and revolves around Georgia and the events leading to her realization that yes she can sing the blues....and she is a 'Blues Goddess'. That's not really a spoiler, tho, as it's nothing more than what's implied in the title.

So, yes, I recommend that you join Georgia in her quest to sing the blues, and meet all her interesting and flamboyant friends, lovers and relatives, and while you're there, have a little taste of New Orleans!

Bitter Sweets by Roopa Farooki

An interesting book, not so much for it's look at Pakistani & Indian culture, as it is an exploration of the way in which human beings lie to and deceive each other and the consequences that can occur. This was not a difficult book to read and did hold my attention throughout. I had thought about halfway through that I 'knew' the ending but then there was a twist or two to the story.

This is a story of three generations of a family and the ties that keep them together. A story of keeping up appearances even when we are aware that everything is not quite what it appears to be. It is also a story of discovery in which the characters learn not only of the secrets each are hiding from each other, but also of the ones they hide from themselves.

I enjoyed this first novel by Roopa Farooki, and would definitely be interested in reading her future work. Bitter Sweets is colourful and full of characters one can both like and dislike. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys light reading.
